2016 RAM 1500 Outdoorsman Trim: Equipment & 4x4

The 2016 RAM 1500 Outdoorsman emphasizes utility and outdoor-use equipment. The Canadian guide lists tow hooks, rubber mats and, on specified 4x4 models, skid plates, an anti-spin rear differential and Class IV hitch equipment.

2016 Canadian factory equipment list; these are descriptions of a trim and its specified 4x4 equipment, not a guarantee of any used truck’s condition or a universal U.S. trim specification.

Outdoorsman versus Big Horn

Outdoorsman concentrates on practical protection and utility items, while Big Horn brings more chrome trim and comfort-focused equipment in the Canadian overview. A 4x4 Outdoorsman may have factory skid plates and an anti-spin rear axle, but equipment is determined by the VIN build sheet, not how a used truck has been advertised.

Does every Outdoorsman have the same 4WD system?

No. Confirm that the truck is actually 4x4 and inspect the transfer-case selector. Different RAM 1500 transfer cases may include 4WD AUTO or only the part-time locked modes. Never use LOCK or LOW on dry high-grip pavement; follow the 2016 owner manual for shifting conditions.

Towing and hitch questions

A factory Class IV receiver appears in the Canadian 4x4 Outdoorsman equipment description. That is not the same as a single maximum trailer weight for every Outdoorsman. Engine, transmission, axle ratio, cab, payload and the individual truck’s door label remain essential; the trailer tongue weight consumes payload.

Wheels, tires and underbody clearance

Start with the door-jamb tire placard, installed wheel and suspension configuration. Tires seen on another Outdoorsman may be an option or aftermarket replacement. Check skid plates, front suspension and transfer-case mounts after off-road use and inspect for bent brackets, leaks and packed debris.

What the anti-spin rear axle changes

An anti-spin differential is designed to help traction when one rear wheel is prone to slipping. It is not the same as a user-selectable locking axle or four-wheel drive. Differential service requires the correct axle identification and lubricant specification; the badge alone is insufficient.

Buying a used Outdoorsman

Check underneath for scraping, frame corrosion, bent protection plates and evidence of water exposure. Test actual 4x4 modes safely and examine hitch fasteners, trailer wiring and rear suspension. A clean exterior tells little about prior towing or gravel-road use; service records and a qualified inspection matter more.

Parts for the Outdoorsman underbody and driveline

Before ordering a skid plate, transfer-case component, rear differential part or shock absorber, identify 4x2 versus 4x4, transfer-case type, rear axle and factory sales codes. The Outdoorsman name does not make all replacement parts interchangeable. Off-road use and prior repairs can also leave different fasteners, suspension components or accessories than the original build record shows.

Trailer equipment versus trailer rating

A factory hitch or integrated trailer-brake controller is useful equipment, but neither alone establishes the allowed trailer weight. Use the 2016 configuration-specific manufacturer chart, the individual truck’s loading label and the actual hitch rating. Include people, cargo and the loaded trailer tongue in payload calculations.

Confirm country and option package before choosing parts

The detailed trim examples above come from 2016 Canadian equipment information. The U.S. RAM brochure also offered this trim name, but individual packages and standard equipment were not necessarily identical in both markets. Confirm the VIN, cab, engine, wheel, headlight and drivetrain equipment before treating a Canadian trim list as the specification of a U.S. truck.

Before working on your vehicle

Use the correct model-year manual and current service information. Stop if instructions or safety precautions are unclear, and use a qualified technician for work you cannot verify.
