MAINTENANCE & FLUIDS

2016 RAM 1500 Transmission Fluid & Service

The 2016 RAM 1500 was offered with different automatic transmissions. Identify the transmission before selecting fluid or a service method; 8-speed and 6-speed requirements are not the same.

Check your configuration

Confirm the engine, trim, drivetrain, market and installed equipment before using a part number, capacity or repair procedure.

Identify the installed gearbox

The 3.6L and 3.0L engines are paired with an eight-speed automatic in the Canadian specification sheet. The 5.7L HEMI appears with six- and eight-speed configurations.

Fluid level is not a simple dipstick check

Some transmissions use specific temperature-controlled service procedures. If the truck has delayed engagement, slipping or abnormal shifts, diagnose the cause before ordering a flush.

Signs that justify diagnosis

An isolated firm shift on a cold morning is different from repeated slipping, delayed Drive/Reverse engagement or an overheated transmission warning. Record the gear, speed, temperature and towing load involved; the clues help distinguish control, fluid and mechanical problems.

Before working on your vehicle

Use the correct model-year manual and current service information. Stop if instructions or safety precautions are unclear, and use a qualified technician for work you cannot verify.
