2016 RAM 1500 Coolant Type & Capacity
Use coolant meeting FCA MS.90032 as directed in the 2016 RAM manual. Total cooling-system capacity varies by engine; do not assume one number covers every truck.

Confirm the engine, trim, drivetrain, market and installed equipment before using a part number, capacity or repair procedure.
Reference specifications
| Engine | Total cooling-system capacity (2016 user guide) |
|---|---|
| 3.6L V6 (1500) | 13.7 US qt / 13 L |
| 5.7L HEMI V8 (1500) | 18.3 US qt / 17.3 L |
| 3.0L EcoDiesel | See 2016 diesel-specific fluid-capacity table and confirm equipment |
The system’s full capacity is not necessarily the amount required after a simple drain. Use correct OAT coolant meeting the specified FCA standard and avoid mixing incompatible formulations.
Use the correct coolant chemistry
The manual calls for an appropriate ten-year/150,000-mile OAT coolant formulation. Mixing incompatible coolant types can create cooling-system problems.
Check the system safely
Inspect the recovery bottle when the engine is cold and look for leaks at hoses, radiator, water pump and connections. Never remove a pressure cap from a hot system.
Why coolant loss needs investigation
Adding coolant repeatedly is not routine maintenance. Check hoses, reservoir, thermostat housing, radiator, water pump and heater components for leakage. A low level together with overheating or cabin heat loss needs prompt attention.
Use the correct model-year manual and current service information. Stop if instructions or safety precautions are unclear, and use a qualified technician for work you cannot verify.
